“When you’re in a slump, you’re not in for much fun…”

“…un-slumping yourself is not easily done.”

The Dr. Dr. Seuss book “Oh, the Places You’ll Go” I’ve read many a time to my kiddos, always stirring in my seat when it was speaking truths that are just too real.

Finding myself in a creative slump recently I decided to “record” my process of un-slumping which made it much easier to go through, admittedly. So here I am, deciding to share it with you awesome folks who are spending your precious minutes reading my kids costume blog.

Creativity is found in all of us. Whether you’re a groovy kids costume designer, an artist, an accountant or a teacher, let’s face it, when you are a parent human getting through, creativity is essential.

What do you do when you hit that slump?

Seriously, message me and tell me!

I’m gonna share with you what I usually do and recently did:

There is a pattern of three major actions.

  1. Feeling sorry for myself for a minute and then deciding to get busy, get proactive.

  2. When the will is there, there must be a way, so I start organising which is my procrastinating/action taking method.

  3. Through that I find an incentive, a fabric, a book, a sketch, a note… whatever “sparks joy”

So in this case I found a bit of fabric. It was time to either let go or do something with it.

I took action, I moved it and shifted and cut and pasted it and made a skirt!

Whether I like the actual skirt or not, I feel it’s irrelevant as for nearly 7 years now, this fabric has provided upholstery for one of my favourite chairs, a changing table caddy for my little baby girl, at the time, and a bag. It’s leftover, now a skirt.

I feel it’s a fulfilled bit of fabric nonetheless and an un-slumping success !
