rainy days are awesome

Rainy days can definitely dampen our little ones lively personalities but also our own capacity for patience. Children need to let out great amounts of energy daily, to feel fulfilled. More often than not, so do adults of course. Instead of making a quite obvious point here, following are some of many ideas of indoor activities to go for on rainy days.

All imagined with the generative force of dress-up play of course:

1-Throw a Costume Parade

Gather a variety of costumes, accessories, and props.

Encourage your little ones to pick a costume and then show them how to parade around the house, showcasing it!

2- Storybook Characters

Choose a favourite storybook and help your kiddo dress up as their favourite character from the book.

Act out scenes or make up new adventures with the characters.

3- A good old-fashioned Fashion Show!

Provide fabric scraps, old clothes, scarves, and hats or if you’re cool with it, let them go through all the cupboards and choose pieces from everyone’s wardrobe.

Let the kiddo create their own collection and put on a fashion show for the family!

4- Superhero Training

Set up an indoor obstacle course using cushions, chairs, and blankets.

Dress your little one as a superhero and guide them through the course, encouraging imaginative play.

5- Animal Safari

Create animal masks or costumes using bits of fabric, paper plates and crayons!

Pretend the living room is a jungle, and go on a safari hunt to find different stuffed animals or toys representing exotic animals.

6- Profession Exploration

Introduce different professions with corresponding costumes (doctor, firefighter, chef, etc.).

Discuss what each job entails and let your child play out those roles.

7- Knight/Princess Tea Party

Dress up as princesses or knights and host a royal tea party.

Use stuffed animals as guests and have a pretend feast with toy dishes and cups.

8-Time Travelling Adventure

Explore different time periods (dinosaurs, pirates, space, etc.).

Create costumes and set up scenes for time-traveling adventures.

9- Magical Creatures Hide and Seek

Dress up as magical creatures (fairies, dragons, unicorns) and play a hide-and-seek game with magical calls or clues.

10- Use the Rainy Day as a Theme

Get your wellies, umbrellas, hats and all you have rain related to dress up and get exploring!

Find slugs, snails and earthworms to join your adventurous day.

I’m pretty convinced that after some or even one of the above, the cabin fever mood would have shifted and you could even throw in some screen time to get something done, leaving all guilty feelings behind.

Look out for Rainbows!
